Blue Jays activate Lawrie off DL
Blue Jays infielder Brett Lawrie has been activated off the 15-day disabled list and is starting at third base and batting sixth in the opener of a key series against Baltimore.
Lawrie, who had been sidelined by a broken finger since he was hit by a pitch from Cincinnati's Johnny Cueto on June 22, is batting. 244 with 12 home runs and 28 RBIs. He went 4 for 10 in a three-game rehab assignment at Class-A Dunedin.
The Blue Jays, who went 18-18 without Lawrie, trail the first-place Orioles by four games in the AL East. Toronto enters play Tuesday one game ahead of New York for the second wild card. To make room for Lawrie, the Blue Jays placed infielder Steve Tolleson on the paternity list. Tolleson, who can miss a maximum of three games, is batting. 246 with three homers and 13 RBIs.
